What is it?

The SpokaneHotZone is a high-speed broadband wireless network that is available for free public Internet access. The SpokaneHotZone is accessible by any computer, portable or handheld device that supports "Wi-Fi."

Users receive two hours free** Internet access per day through OneEighty Networks, the broadband provider for the SpokaneHotZone. By fourth quarter of 2004, OneEighty anticipates making additional hours available through the purchase of a day pass or via a monthly subscription service.

Wi-Fi, also known as Wireless Fidelity, uses the wireless protocol 802.11b which is the current industry standard.

**Access to City-specific sites, like City of Spokane, Downtown Spokane Partnership, Spokane Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Spokane Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau will be available at no charge to the user, regardless of time spent online.

If you have configured your LAN card and you still are unable to connect to the network, you may contact the OneEighty Networks support line Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, at 509.688.2211 or spokanehotzone@go180.net.

Why Wireless?

The SpokaneHotZone is one of the City of Spokane’s economic development initiatives. The City is investing in a city-wide wireless network that will be dual purpose:

• Institutional domain for municipal operational and communication use
• Commercial domain for wireless access to anyone in the SpokaneHotZone

Free wireless Internet access has been demonstrated to encourage innovation and drive economic growth. Mobile users say access to email and the Internet enables them to be more productive. Commercial users say they can offer and deliver better services to their customers over a wireless network.
